Welome to my studio blog! Sea Pearl was finished this morning, another painting in low-key value and color like the last, Maritime Meet-Up. My new painting is also based on fishing boats at Crescent City, observed at dawn with a lifting fog. I am trying to recreate that luminous moment at the harbor, a great challenge because lights and darks seem so different than in bright sunshine. I hope you enjoy my new work, Carol

Hi, Welcome to my studio! Just finished a painting with a lot of mood, which I am calling "Maritime Meet-up". Based on a misty dawn sight in Crescent City, CA, harbor, I enjoyed keeping the color and value changes minimal to reflect the possibilities of vision at that hour (about 7 am). My show is up in Monte Rio, CA, until Monday morning--so catch that now if you have meant to but put it off! Eighteen boat paintings to please your maritime art appetite. The Village Inn is also a beautiful and inviting place to eat or stay on the Russian River. Back again soon, I hope, Carol

Welcome to my studio blog! Except this week I went painting plein air at History Park in San Jose. I picked this beautiful little Chinese temple to paint and enjoyed loosening and speeding up my process! Actually I think I hated it at the time, but I claim it was good for me. I don't have to be controlled and calculating all the time while I work! Someone involved in managing the building asked to see it when it was done. I hope she visits this blog to see the final product.

I did about an hour's work today in the studio, straightening edges and reasserting dark values. At least I did that until I knew, to go farther would begin to harm the immediacy of the picture. The weather was perfect, the park is just beautiful. I highly recommend a trip to anyone within reach of San Jose. Thank you, History San Jose, for a fine experience!

Carol

Welcome, after such a long time, to my art studio blog. Several personal and technical challenges have kept me from posting for far too long. I have been at work in the studio however. This is the latest, titled "Numerous Nautical Piles." I see I still haven't signed it yet, which usually means I have some adjustments yet to come. But I hope you enjoy this harbor view at sunset.

Welcome! You may well wonder why it's been so long without a post from me. Several shows and events needed extra attention for the past month, so the painting had to take a back seat. Now I have completed a view of Eureka, CA, harbor in a radically warm palette. The composition is one I am happy with, even though I did not stay as transparent with my colors as I meant to. Transparent browns are a challenge. Anyway it's an interesting experiment I hope. If you look close, the parts that seem to be white are not really stark white at all. I still have some work to do: shipping paintings here and there as well as preparing a show for Sonoma County this summer; but I plan to be painting and posting more regularly from now on until next spring. As always, comments are welcome. Carol

Welcome to my studio! Finally you get to see the completed "Monica" painting. I apologize for the poor quality of the photo, caused by a camera with a major lens problem. Time for a new camera. But for those who are eager to see what I have been developing here, perhaps an acceptable version. Feel free to leave your comments by click "comments" below. (No membership, etc., involved.) Carol

Welcome back! The "Monica Lee" (tentative title but looking for another) is taking form very slowly. I am getting ready for Silicon Valley Open Studio days beginning May 3, I only have a little time now and then to paint. Ah, the artist's life! Still a few hours' work to go here I think, adding some more working parts to the fishing gear on this craft. Thanks for stopping by, Carol

Hi, Studio Visitor, This image depicts the painting after several hours more work. Close to my idea but needing more shadow definition. Also worried that my camera lens is blurred even after careful cleaning, an effect I see in the last few photos. Now comes the time to make hard choices, what to include, what to omit, to express my original concept. Thanks for stopping by, Carol

Hi, Does this picture look like it was painted with mercurichrome? Does anyone even use that stuff anymore (for little skin scrapes and scratches)? It's a little embarrassing to post these intermediate stages here for the world to laugh at. (Or at least those special folks who check into this blog regularly.) But I know others are curious. I know I am always fascinated by watching others paint. Anyhow, we are at that "how did I go so wrong?" stage: it happens every time, no matter the final outcome. If anyone has any questions or comments, you can post them here without registering or joining anything. Just click on "comments" below. Thanks for stopping by, Carol

Welcome to my studio blog! I am getting excited about this painting. The sketch has been done on the watercolor paper, shown in the photo. I hope to make this painting very warm in color and lots of contrasting value. It means turning a mid-day lighting situation into the low light of evening, when the longer, redder rays of sunlight are dominant. Keep checking in for new developments! Carol
